Every meeting room in a hybrid workplace now serves two audiences at once. There are the people at the table, and there are the people arriving through a camera, watching a feed that has already made dozens of small decisions about how the room, and the people in it, will appear. For years, lighting solutions treated this as a desk-side problem: a ring light angled at a laptop, a lamp dragged closer to a screen.

Most commercial lighting solutions’ specifications are built around the same framework: fixture type, lumen output, colour temperature, and compliance with energy or safety standards. On paper, that looks like a complete brief. In practice, it leaves out one of the most consequential variables in how a space performs: the material the light actually lands on.
