A hotel is read before it is understood. Guests register warmth, scale, and material within seconds of walking through the door, long before they consciously evaluate the space. At The Centrum, DAM Solutions was engaged to prepare hotel lighting that read from end to end. One continuous experience of light spanning arrival, transit, and rest, rather than a series of disconnected rooms each solved on their own terms.

A lighting scheme that worked - the right ambience, the right hierarchy, the right spatial character - gets carried into a larger space, and something is off. The fixtures are the same. The colour temperature hasn't changed. The layout logic followed the same rationale. And yet the space doesn't perform the way the original did.

Most commercial lighting solutions’ specifications are built around the same framework: fixture type, lumen output, colour temperature, and compliance with energy or safety standards. On paper, that looks like a complete brief. In practice, it leaves out one of the most consequential variables in how a space performs: the material the light actually lands on.

Many projects invest heavily in architectural lighting design, yet overlook the system that determines how that lighting actually behaves every day: control. Lights may be carefully specified, positioned, and calculated. But if the control strategy is not defined early, the system eventually relies on guesswork, manual overrides, and inconsistent operation. Over time, this weakens the original design intent.
