From Lobby to Lights-Out at The Centrum

A hotel is read before it is understood. Guests register warmth, scale, and material within seconds of walking through the door, long before they consciously evaluate the space. At The Centrum, DAM Solutions was engaged to prepare hotel lighting that read from end to end. 

One continuous experience of light spanning arrival, transit, and rest, rather than a series of disconnected rooms each solved on their own terms. The result is architectural lighting design built around a single guest journey, not a checklist of spaces, and it is a useful reminder of what lighting design can do when it is treated as infrastructure rather than decoration.

The Arrival Sets The Register

The lobby is where a property either announces itself or apologises for itself, and there is no second attempt at a first impression. 

We composed The Centrum's arrival sequence through architectural lighting so warmth, scale, and materiality resolved together the moment a guest crossed the threshold. Layered light drawing out stone and timber, vertical surfaces given enough lift to read as generous rather than merely lit, and a colour temperature calibrated to feel welcoming without tipping into artificial comfort.

A lobby, unlike almost any other space in the building, never closes. The lighting design had to hold its composition at a 2 AM check-in as convincingly as 7 PM arrivals, without the flattening or over-brightness that late-night lighting so often defaults to. 

That consistency in architectural lighting across every hour is a deliberate outcome of allocation - matching output and layering to occupancy patterns that shift constantly but a register that shouldn't.

The Spaces Between

Corridors, lifts, and landings rarely get credited for shaping how a stay feels, yet they are where a guest spends real, if unnoticed, time. Left unattended, long runs flatten into a single droning wash, and guests lose orientation somewhere between the elevator and their own door. 

The lighting layout plan we aimed to implement had to provide The Centrum's connective spaces rhythm - vertical light breaking up corridor lines so the eye has somewhere to land, gentle emphasis at key thresholds guiding guests toward their room, and light levels stepping down in careful increments from public brightness to private calm.

That gradient matters more than any single fixture choice. A guest moving from a bright lobby directly into a dim room experiences a jolt; moving through a corridor that eases them down by degrees experiences a transition. 

It is one of the clearest examples in the property of lighting design solving a behavioural problem rather than a purely visual one, and it shows why commercial lighting solutions for hospitality need to account for movement through a building, not just the rooms it passes through. 

The Room That Does Everything

In architectural lighting, if the lobby is the most visible brief, the guest room is the most demanding. A single compact footprint has to support work, grooming, unwinding, and sleep, often for a guest operating an unfamiliar control panel for the first time and with no patience to learn it. We treated the room as a layered system rather than a single ambient wash, with the guest room scheme accounting for:

• Task light at the desk and mirror, bright and directional enough for real work and grooming

• Warm ambient layers for evening, shifting the room's register without a guest needing to notice the shift happening

• Controls a first-time guest understands instantly, with no manual and no hesitation

• True darkness when the day ends, with no stray glow from switches or fixtures undermining sleep

  
  

Every layer had to fail gracefully into the next; a guest reading in bed, working late at the desk, or leaving at dawn all needed the room to already understand what they were about to do. It is far more demanding than a light installation run off a single template.

Seen individually, the lobby, corridors, and guest rooms at The Centrum are lit for entirely different purposes, at different intensities, on different schedules. 

Seen together, they read as a single, unmistakable property. That coherence is the actual deliverable through precise architectural lighting, shifting from morning brightness to evening warmth to night stillness without a guest ever registering the adjustment taking place.
